What the Program Is

The BCS Cleft Lip and Palate State Program (Programa Estatal de Labio y Paladar Hendido de BCS) is a first-of-its-kind government-backed initiative in Baja California Sur. Established in 2022 in partnership with the BCS Ministry of Health, Smile Train, and the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, it provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and ongoing care to children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate across the state.

The program brings together specialists in surgery, pediatrics, speech therapy, psychology, orthodontics, dentistry, ENT, audiology, and nutrition under a single coordinated care model.

Terapia ComuniCabo’s Role in the Program

We are a founding partner of this program. Within the program, we fund and provide:

Speech Therapy: Licensed therapists provide free, ongoing speech and language therapy to CLP children across Baja California Sur, from birth through adulthood. This includes an Early Intervention Program for newborns and infants — starting from birth — that guides parents through developmental milestones, the importance of babbling and early vocalization, and how to stimulate speech and language at home. Modeled on leading early intervention programs in the United States, this program is critical: the earlier therapy begins, the better a child’s speech outcomes after surgery.
Orthodontics: ComuniCabo funds a specialized orthodontist with deep expertise in cleft lip and palate — a level of specialization that virtually no private orthodontist in Baja California Sur has. Orthodontic care for CLP patients is not simply braces: it is a lifelong, multi-stage process that begins at birth and works hand-in-hand with surgery and speech therapy. Without it, speech therapy results are limited. The journey includes: NAM (Nasoalveolar Molding) plates fitted for newborns in the weeks before surgery to shape the lip, nose, and gum; growth-guidance appliances during childhood to direct jaw and palate development; and full orthodontic correction (braces) as the child grows. Our orthodontist also serves as Medical Director, overseeing and coordinating the entire dental component of the BCS State CLP Program. Very few orthodontists in Mexico are trained to provide this full continuum of care — ComuniCabo makes it available free of charge.
Psychology: An integral part of our multidisciplinary approach, providing ongoing emotional and behavioral support to individuals with cleft lip and palate and their families throughout every stage of treatment, enhancing both quality of life and overall treatment success.
