Normalize the lives of children with cleft lip and palate in Baja California Sur, by improving their ability to Communicate verbally through free speech and language therapy services.
Provide emotional support and CLP education to the parents of cleft palate babies through our early stimulation program.
Our vision is that all the cleft palate children of Baja California Sur be able to integrate into society and not be limited by their unintelligible speech to meet their potential in life.
Our team consists of three professional, paid therapists, who offer their services to children with cleft lip and palate. We have a volunteer director, a volunteer office manager and a volunteer board consisting of US, Canadian and Mexican citizens.
Dr. Emil Hecht, ENT and Facial Plastic Surgeon and Tannia Hecht MA, Speech Pathologist were invited to join the team of one of the Smiles Programs who came to operate on cleft palate children in Los Cabos Mexico.
After working with this team for a few years the Hechts became aware that even after the lip and palate were surgically corrected, these children were not able to communicate correctly. They realized that a problem needed to be solved.
The Hechts found three licensed speech therapists who were willing to be trained by experienced master therapists in Mexico and and US on the anatomical, physiological difference, and techniques needed to teach these children new sounds.
